Injunction Regarding Online Privacy Protection

2025-03-11

Injunction Regarding Online Privacy Protection
The case occurred during the 2019 anti-extradition bill movement.
The personal information of several police officers and their families, including their addresses, phone numbers, ID numbers, and their children's schools, was widely disclosed online, leading to harassment, threats, and even financial losses.
The Department of Justice, on behalf of the police, applied to the High Court for an injunction to prevent further "doxxing."
The court granted an interim injunction on October 25, 2019, prohibiting any person from publishing the personal information of police officers and their families without authorization, or from inciting, abetting, or assisting others in such acts.
The injunction was subsequently extended several times and upgraded to a permanent injunction. This case is a significant precedent in the Hong Kong courts regarding online privacy protection.
